On Thursday, the 4th of April, 37 Secondary Students from Years 8 to 12 got on a Bus with Adelaide as the destination, to try and attain the SSSA Athletics E1 shield. These students had performed and achieved personal success already at two previous Athletics Carnivals this year – the St Martins Sports Day, as well as the South East Interschool Athletics day, held in Bordertown.

We arrived in Adelaide shortly after lunch and checked into our accommodation at the YHA. With some time to spare, the staff and students walked to Rundle Mall to spend a couple of hours shopping and seeing what the CBD had to offer, as well find a place for the group to have dinner.  Later that night, the students were split up into groups, and tackled the Adelaide Escape Rooms. They worked as teams to work out riddles, challenging puzzles and look for clues in order to escape the room before the other groups.

The next morning, after a quick briefing and breakfast, the group was off to the Adelaide Athletics Stadium in Hindmarsh to compete against the other schools in the E1 division, after being promoted from the F1 division in our inaugural year, 2018. The students competed extremely well over the course of the day, in 109 events. From these events, the students at St Martins Lutheran College placed in 70 events, with 30 firsts, 22 seconds, and 18 thirds, which is an incredible achievement for the students. At the culmination of the events, and after adding up the results, St Martins Lutheran College finished First in the Boys Division, First in the Girls Division, and First in the Combined results.

There were some extraordinary individual efforts on the day, with Georgia Gherardin (100m), Hannah Elliot (400m), and Zac Ler (100m and 200m) achieving a Standard of Excellence, meaning they achieved in the top 5% of ALL Secondary School Students across South Australia. An extra special mention to Hannah, who represented South Australia and competed in the National Athletics Championships in Sydney only 2 days later, where she came 6th in the 3000m Steeple Chase.
