This term the Year 8 Tech Group students have designed their own model cars using a variety of materials. They used recycled components from computer DVD drives to provide the propulsion. There was quite a bit of problem solving and collaboration involved to complete the task with their own unique designs. This was the first stage in designing and building a full size electric powered go kart. It was decided at the start that building a model first would enable the students to consider some of the engineering challenges that would need to be addressed to build a reliable go kart. The students learned about safe working procedures, using various tools such as, glue guns, drills, pulley ratios, drive systems, friction, designing a switch and basic low voltage wiring.
